Thanks to our Round 1 Judges

We would like to give a special thank you to our judges for Round 1, William and Helen! They not only scored the images but also provided valuable feedback to the competitors.

Helen Brennan

Helen Brennan is a creative director with over fifteen years experience in advertising, design and creative strategy. Hailing from Brisbane, she began her career as a writer, before venturing into the world of graphic design.

Helen has held several positions within the design and advertising industries, including six years as Creative Director of a boutique Brisbane agency, where she was responsible for the inception and implementation of countless creative campaigns.

Her writing and design skills have proven a powerful combination throughout her career, allowing her to see the entire creative process through to fruition. She now works closely with a select group of clients through her own business, Helen Brennan Creative.

Her client work is complemented by her drive to contribute to her industry, influencing a new generation of creative minds through her lecturing role at Design College Australia. She also spent several years serving as Council Member for the Australian Graphic Design Association’s (AGDA) Queensland chapter, and has contributed varied editorial content to industry publications such as Desktop Magazine.

Helen continues her client work, lecturing, writing and industry involvement, most recently introducing professional mentorship to her range of services. A proud social media advocate, Helen admits she gets anxious if she goes too long between tweets.

William Long

Photography is my all-consuming life.
I love what I do, and I do it with an overwhelming passion.

I’m fortunate to work in a field that both inspires and challenges me. The passion never seems to recede; the challenge never seems to diminish; the diversity is always a thrill, a constant path of opportunities and creative solutions. This has enabled me to earn a living at what I love for over twenty five years; working across the globe in UK, Europe, USA, Asia and Australia.

My diverse and innovative approach to my work is a result of a wide and varied professional background. Originally from the UK, I studied both the performing and visual arts, starting my professional life as a performer. A four year involvement in marketing and arts production followed; eventually focussing my energies on my lifelong passion, photography.

My photographic career began prior to the 1980’s, quickly establishing a niche market in the highly specialised field of performing arts photography. I eventually evolved into many areas of commercial and portrait photography. 1990’s brought about a permanent move to Australia, forming Longshots Photography; where I have been mainly involved in the exciting and varied world of architectural, commercial, industrial and lifestyle photography.

The first ShootingRAW group collaboration project at South Bank Parklands, Brisbane

ShootingRAW South Bank

Group Briefing

It’s a moderately sunny afternoon along the river at South Bank Parklands and the group have started to gather. A cool breeze is in the air and the laughter of children in the background echoes around us. You can feel the tension as they all look around to see if they know anyone they may have worked with as they introduce themselves.

ShootingRAW South Bank

Team 4 before starting

Pat starts the roll call and ladies and gentleman its show time. A quick run down on boundaries, the release forms are signed and the brief is handed out with no more instructions. 4 Teams were formed and are now on their own with some teams choosing to hang back at “base” to start their make-up while others split up and scout locations to work with.

Visit South Bank have been asked to provide an image for the cover of a national tourism magazine. They are wanting photos that portray the creative side of South Bank. Images must include talent .

The day went on with spits of rain and wind but that didn’t stop the teams, they ventured on. As there was no time limit we did not expect teams to stay out as long as they did. I believe the round of drinks pack down finished at about 6:30pm, just after the sun had set.

Photographers have two weeks from shooting date to deliver 1 final image as their entry (31st of May). Editing is allowed with the only restriction – no composites. Photographers are allowed to remove anything from the image but are not allowed to add anything to it. Whether it be a building, person, object or replacing the sky.

The images will then be judged by a Professional photographer who will judge on the technical aspects and also a Creative Director who will look at it based on the relevance of the image to the brief.

What next?
We will be collecting feedback from the first group to see what we need to change. We’ve already had a few ideas on what we need to change. If you have an idea you would like to see please drop us an email using the contact form or if you are interested in being part of future projects register your details.
